The Subtle Art of Shower Storage

Ever looked at a cluttered shower and thought, “There must be a better way”? Enter the shower niche, the unsung hero of practical bath design. Thoughtful placement and sizing can transform your shower from chaotic to serene. We don’t love our bathrooms looking like the Bed Bath & Beyond return bin. We prefer a subtle, out of the way, niche that seamlessly blends with surfaces.

Wondering where to position your niche? Ideally, shower niches should be placed at a height between 48 to 60 inches from the floor, making them easy to reach without bending or stretching. Common dimensions vary, but a popular size is 12 inches wide by 24 inches high, offering plenty of room for shampoos, conditioners, and a multitude of face scrubs, oils and anti-aging hopefuls.

Tiling Techniques for Niches

When it comes to tiling your shower niche, the design possibilities are endless. My go-to recommendation:

  • Seamless Integration: Continue the existing shower tile pattern into the niche for a cohesive look. It’s subtle, sleek, and says, “I have my life together.”

  • Slab Shelf: A slab shelf for a shower niche is a must. It helps with drainage and keeps water from pooling in corners, avoiding moisture buildup.

Thoughtfully designed shower niches create spaces that are just as functional as they are beautiful. Remember, it’s the little details that make a big difference, because life’s too short for boring showers!
